In that cottage whose space heater coils glowed red, as he finished the last of Marlys’s cookies, Godfrey thought of the couple and their “half shelter / half spa.” Although he’d been told the welcome mat was out for as long as he needed, it seemed his ability to accept kindness had a cap and he stayed only two nights.

Watching the way Necia and Ned interacted—was there some magnetic connection going on that made it impossible for them to pass one another without kissing or touching?—Godfrey felt like a D student in a class whose subject, married love, would drop his grade even lower. His own parents had been more adversaries than allies, fighting the civil war that was their own union, until his father went AWOL, leaving the family when Godfrey was ten. He had no doubt that Chauncey and Eve had had a loving relationship, but unfortunately, was never sober enough around them to notice.

The last morning Godfrey was at Bo’s Place, Jerilyn announced during breakfast that she was giving free haircuts—“Don’t worry, I went to barber college before I joined the army”—and while Fred and Terry agreed to take her up on the offer, Godfrey was not willing to say goodbye to his long hair, feeling it gave him some kind of protection. Against what, he wasn’t exactly sure, but he liked the weight of his ponytail against his neck.

“How about you, Necia?” asked Jerilyn.

“Oh, no,” said their host, patting her nearly foot-high afro. “This gives me extra height.”

“She doesn’t understand that in most people’s eyes, and certainly mine,” said Ned, pulling his aproned wife to his lap, “she’s a beautiful and mighty Amazon.”

Necia kissed him and said, “Thank you, sir,” and to the others at the table, she stage-whispered, “He’ll say anything for the last waffle.”
